Replacement of expansion joint

Two of Øresundsbron's largest expansion joints are being replaced simultaneously – a solution that shortens the total project time by a full year. The work will affect traffic for approximately eight weeks starting August 31.

Road traffic will be restricted over approximately 1.5 kilometres due to extensive and necessary maintenance work from 31 August until the end of October.

Two of Øresundsbron's largest expansion joints are being replaced simultaneously – an approach that shortens the total project duration by a full year. The work has been planned to minimise the impact on road traffic as much as possible, but for approximately eight weeks, traffic flow across the bridge will be limited.

The expansion joints are being replaced at the same time, on either side of the high bridge. The joints run across the full width of the bridge and will be replaced in sections, in order to keep the bridge open during the maintenance work.

Expansion joints allow the bridge to move in response to temperature changes and load. They form an essential part of the bridge structure and need to be replaced in order to maintain a safe and reliable connection.

Facts: How road traffic is affected

  • One lane is open in each direction over a stretch of approximately 1.5 kilometres.

  • Speed is reduced through the work zone.

  • Wide vehicles (over 3.75 metres) and heavy transports (over 100 tonnes) cannot use the crossing during the works.

  • Rail traffic is not affected and runs as normal.

How to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible across the bridge:

  • Follow the zip merge principle when two lanes merge into one. The idea is that all vehicles take turns – alternating one car from each lane – when two lanes merge into one. This reduces the risk of congestion, as both lanes can be used for as long as possible before the roadworks on the bridge, resulting in a better traffic flow.

  • If you are not a commuter and are able to travel outside of peak hours (07:00–09:00 towards Denmark and 16:00–18:00 towards Sweden), we recommend avoiding rush hour so that traffic flows more smoothly for those who need to travel at those times.

  • Allow a little extra travel time across the crossing during this period.

  • Keep your distance, adjust your speed, and drive carefully.
