This is how the Øresundsbron pricing works

The cost of crossing the Øresund Bridge depends on several factors. The ambition is that those who drive the most also pay the least per trip – the price therefore depends on what type of customer you are.

Without an agreement, you pay the full price. Øresundsbron is not tax-funded – it is entirely financed by road users. The following factors influence the pricing:

Exchange rate differences

The difference in price between Swedish and Danish kroner depends on the exchange rate. For pricing, the Danish krone is used as the basis since it is pegged to the Euro, making it more stable compared to the Swedish krona. Typically, prices are adjusted due to exchange rate fluctuations a few times a year.

Competition in the Øresund region

In 1991 Sweden and Denmark signed an agreement to build the Øresund Bridge . The agreement states that "the level of ferry fares on the Helsingborg–Helsingør route" should be the reference point for the cost of driving cars and trucks across the Øresund Bridge. This means that Øresundsbron cannot set prices arbitrarily but must take both ferry and train fares into account in order not to distort competition in the region.

Repaying loans

The Øresund Bridge was built with financing through loans from the Swedish and Danish states. The plan is that both the bridge and the land connections will be fully repaid by 2050.

What happens to the revenue?

Revenue from the Øresund Bridge goes, besides repaying loans, to operation and maintenance. The Øresundsbro Consortium has around 150 employees responsible for everything from keeping the connection safe and sustainable to assisting customers at the toll station. Any surplus revenue also goes back to the owners: the Swedish and Danish states.

Alternatives to a full-price ticket

There are several discount agreements available for both private individuals and businesses that can make the crossing less costly. Which agreement is most beneficial depends on how many trips are made, but the idea is that those who travel most should also pay the least per crossing.
