Øresundsmotorvejen is being expanded
The Øresund Motorway will be expanded over the coming years to improve traffic flow, which is currently affected by significant congestion and queues during peak hours.

In April 2026, Sund & Bælt began the first phase of the work, which involves an expansion with additional lanes between exit 20, Copenhagen C, and exit 17, Lufthavn V. In addition, a parallel ramp is to be constructed between exit 19, Ørestad, and exit 20, Copenhagen S.
The expansion coincides with several other roadworks on Amager, including Energinet's work on Vejlands Allé, which is creating congestion and queues on all roads in the area and leading to additional traffic on the Øresund Motorway.

How the work on the Øresund Motorway is being carried out
On the Øresund Motorway, traffic is directed into the outer lanes so that work can be carried out in the central reservation along the entire stretch. This means that the lanes are narrower than normal and that the speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h. Traffic may therefore be denser than usual and queues may form – particularly if additional traffic from the on-ramps adds to the load at the same time.
The motorway also lacks a hard shoulder for the remainder of the construction period, making traffic more vulnerable in the event of accidents.
